This gets asked a lot, and the honest answer is “it depends on the province” rather than a single yes or no.
Ontario
Ontario runs its own regulated online gambling market through iGaming Ontario (launched April 2022). Operators licensed by iGaming Ontario can legally advertise and operate in the province. This is the clearest, most protected path for Ontario residents.
Everywhere else
Most other provinces don’t yet license private online casino operators (some run their own provincial lottery-corporation sites, e.g. PlayNow in BC, PlayAlberta in Alberta). Outside those provincial offerings, Canadians in these provinces typically play at offshore-licensed sites (usually Curacao). This sits in a legal grey area — it’s not explicitly illegal for the player, but you’re relying on an offshore regulator rather than a Canadian one if something goes wrong.
We flag licensing status for every operator on our Canada rankings so you know what you’re actually signing up for.
